Alex Gibney’s Musk Documentary Trailer Explores Tesla, SpaceX, Twitter and DOGE
Elon Musk attacked Alex Gibney’s Musk as a “hit” and a “psycho movie,” but the film has instead received a positive critical reception so far—despite its daunting 3-hour-and-45-minute runtime.
An AI-generated Elon Musk appears in the film
Gibney said Musk refused to be interviewed for the documentary. In response, the filmmaker created an AI version of Musk to stand in for the interview, using Musk’s public words verbatim. That decision is likely to become one of the film’s most controversial elements.
The documentary covers Tesla, SpaceX, Twitter and DOGE
The trailer includes several high-profile incidents involving Tesla and fatal accidents associated with its driver-assistance systems, SpaceX, Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, DOGE, and his 14—or possibly more—children.
Those interviewed include Musk’s ex-wife Justine Musk; technology journalists Kara Swisher and Zoe Schiffer; engineers Martin Eberhard and Jeffrey Hinton; and former MAGA influencer Ashley St. Clair, who has a child with Musk. Cory Doctorow and physicist Adam Becker also appear to be featured in the trailer.
David Byrne contributes an original song
David Byrne co-wrote and performed an original song for the film, “Let Me Sell You a Dream.” The song incorporates more of Musk’s own words.
Musk release date and streaming details
Musk is scheduled to be released in theaters in the United States on October 9. Deadline Hollywood reports that Universal has confirmed an international release in the first quarter of 2027, with streaming on HBO scheduled to begin around the same time.
