Democrat Mr. Talarico’s victory marked a major turning point in the midterm elections, helping reinforce Democratic control of the U.S. Congress amid a nationwide wave of victories. The result came despite Elon Musk’s substantial financial and public support for Republican candidates, including Mr. Paxton.
Musk’s growing political influence in Texas
Musk has increasingly made Texas the base for his companies, including Tesla’s headquarters in Austin and SpaceX’s Starbase launch site.
Alongside supporting Paxton through outside groups, Musk used his platform to promote conspiracy theories about the Democratic Party. After briefly disappearing from the campaign trail in October, he posted: “There’s something seriously wrong with Talarico.”
“There is something deeply flawed in our political system that allows a trillionaire to buy a private US Senate seat,” Talarico wrote in response.
How Musk’s political spending works
In addition to donating to one of the most expensive Senate races in history, Musk has donated an estimated $446 million to support Republican candidates, making him the top individual donor overall in this year’s midterm elections.
Musk’s money was routed through super PACs. These political action committees can raise unlimited amounts of money, but they cannot donate directly to candidates or coordinate with campaigns.
Individuals, political parties and traditional organisations face legal restrictions on direct political donations. Super PACs work around those limits by spending their own money on activities such as advertising that supports candidates.
Musk became one of the Republican Party’s biggest donors in 2024, directing hundreds of millions of dollars towards Donald Trump’s successful presidential campaign.
However, the scale of Musk’s spending was not enough to secure the same outcome for Paxton this time.
