King Charles Warns of Disinformation and Cyber Threats in the Digital Age
King Charles III has warned that disinformation and other “hostile online activity” are undermining trust and security in the digital age.
King Charles praises the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre
The King made the comments in a letter to the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) marking the agency’s 10th anniversary. He said “malicious threat actors” continue to “utilize automated technology to evolve their tactics.”
“From threats to international order to the need to balance the risks and opportunities of powerful new technologies, strong cybersecurity is essential to making the online environment safer and more resilient,” he said.
In the letter, released by the NCSC on Saturday, King Charles praised the government agency for its work over the past decade. He said its achievements included defending the country against cyberattacks, safeguarding democratic institutions and protecting “the critical infrastructure on which daily life depends.”
“You have built resilience across our public services, businesses and communities, enabling us all to thrive in an ever-evolving digital world,” the monarch added.
The King said he was “acutely aware” that much of the NCSC’s work does not receive public praise and expressed his “deep gratitude” to the agency.
NCSC marks 10 years of protecting the UK from cyber threats
The NCSC was established in 2016 as part of the Government Communications Headquarters to protect the UK from cyber threats.
Its anniversary comes as concerns grow over disinformation, automated cyberattacks and the security risks associated with powerful new technologies.
King previously warned about the risks of artificial intelligence
Last month, King Charles warned AI executives of the “existential danger” posed by technology falling into the wrong hands.
His latest letter follows a meeting with AI executives at Dumfries House in Ayrshire last month, where he discussed how the technology could be used to benefit security.
