NASA Launches Two New Initiatives to Advance Space Science and Innovation
NASA is launching two new science and technology initiatives designed to advance scientific understanding and accelerate innovation that will shape America’s future in space.
The initiatives were announced on the sidelines of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy’s (OSTP) Golden Age Summit, which will bring together top U.S. government leaders in Washington on Thursday. The programs reflect NASA’s commitment to pioneering research, transformative technologies, and the Trump Administration’s vision outlined in its July report to the President, Science: A New Golden Age.
One initiative focuses on improving scientific peer review. The other will support fellowship researchers through the new Genesis Mission Fellowships.
NASA Expands Metascience and Dual Anonymous Peer Review
NASA is establishing a coordinated metascience initiative within its Science Mission Directorate to improve the reliability, efficiency, transparency, and overall productivity of the agency’s scientific activities.
As part of this effort, NASA is expanding its use of dual anonymous peer review. Under this approach, proposals are evaluated based only on their essential scientific merit. NASA says the process increases equity and supports innovative and unconventional research ideas.
The effort began as a pilot program during the first Trump administration and helped establish NASA as a leader in promoting best practices for scientific reviews.
Genesis Mission Fellowships Will Support Emerging Researchers
NASA will sponsor 10 Genesis Mission Fellows. The fellows will be accelerated doctoral students with dual competencies in superintelligence (SI) and science or engineering.
Genesis Mission Fellows will work directly with NASA mission areas, conduct research at NASA laboratories, and use SI to advance scientific discovery. The fellowship builds on future researchers in NASA’s successful NASA Earth and Space Science and Technology Program.
NASA Invests in the Future of Space Discovery
“NASA has a proud history of pursuing bold ideas and accomplishing the nearly impossible,” said NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman. “Under President Trump’s leadership, we are building on that legacy by creating new opportunities for great science, experimenting with ways to assess and accelerate the best ideas, and investing in the next generation of researchers through Genesis Mission Fellowships. We are entering a new golden age of American innovation and discovery, and NASA will be at the forefront of it.”
Isaacman and Michael Kratsios, Assistant to the President for Science and Technology and Director of OSTP, discussed the initiatives as part of the Golden Age Summit.
NASA leads the nation in space exploration, scientific discovery, and technological innovation. Through these two initiatives, the agency continues its work to advance science and technology while inspiring the world.
