CDC and FDA Aware of Potential Salad Greens Link: Officials from the CDC and FDA have indicated awareness of reports associating current health concerns with salad greens and Taco Bell. However, during a recent press conference, they refrained from labeling these items as confirmed suspects in the investigation.
Dr. Biggerstaff emphasized that authorities are actively gathering tracking data on food consumption patterns, in addition to genetic data from parasites and their food sources. “At this moment, we have not identified any specific sources. Nevertheless, we are committed to collecting and analyzing data diligently,” he stated at the press briefing.
Donald Prater, Deputy Commissioner for Food at the FDA, added, “Currently, we are investigating multiple agricultural products, including lettuce, but we cannot provide specific details yet.”
As reported by the CDC, the number of confirmed and probable cyclosporiasis cases in the U.S. has surged past 6,745 this summer—a significant rise compared to the typical annual figures ranging from 2,000 to 5,000 cases. Summer marks the peak season for such parasitic infections.
Although a specific outbreak source has not yet been pinpointed, health officials are advising caution when consuming leafy greens, particularly pre-packaged varieties. It is advisable to purchase whole lettuce, remove the outer two to three layers of leaves, and wash the remaining leaves thoroughly. Opting for produce that can be peeled or has a smooth surface is recommended for added safety. Cooking produce to at least 158°F (70°C) effectively eliminates parasites, making it a safer choice.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) notes that past cyclosporiasis outbreaks have been linked to bagged salad mixes, fresh herbs like cilantro and basil, as well as berries, snap peas, and green onions.
Individuals experiencing persistent watery diarrhea are urged to seek medical advice. Antibiotic treatment can effectively manage infections, alongside adequate rest and hydration.
