Microsoft is actively addressing a recognized issue affecting Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), leading to synchronization problems for over a week.
WSUS, introduced nearly two decades ago, enables IT administrators to manage updates for Microsoft products across enterprise networks from a single local server, streamlining the update process.
Typically, WSUS synchronizes with Microsoft Update servers daily to retrieve the latest metadata for available Windows updates. However, affected servers have experienced synchronization breaks, preventing administrators from deploying the latest updates through WSUS or Configuration Manager.
According to Microsoft, the WSUS synchronization issue impacts both client (Windows 10 version 1607 and later) and server (Windows Server 2012 and later) platforms.
“Organizations may experience prolonged synchronization times or timeouts during synchronization operations on their WSUS servers. This issue has escalated since July 13, 2026,” Microsoft reported via the Windows Health Dashboard updates.
On Saturday, Microsoft implemented mitigations to alleviate WSUS synchronization and operational issues for new installations or rebuilt WSUS servers.
However, Microsoft is diligently working on further mitigations for existing WSUS servers that continue to face synchronization issues.
“Synchronization times and operations on WSUS servers have been restored to normal for new installations and rebuilds. For previously impacted WSUS servers, we are developing solutions to help customers safely clear the affected metadata,” the company stated.
Last May, Microsoft resolved a similar issue after business clients reported WSUS errors when updating their Windows 11 22H2/23H2 systems.
In July 2025, Microsoft tackled another WSUS problem that hindered organizations from syncing with Microsoft Update to roll out the latest Windows updates.
Just a month later, an additional issue preventing the delivery of August 2025 security updates via WSUS was resolved by Microsoft.
