Monzo has resolved a technical outage that prevented some customers from using their cards, making payments and sending or receiving bank transfers.
The UK digital bank said on X, external that it had identified several technical issues and activated backup services. These measures were intended to help customers continue making card payments, withdrawing cash and sending or receiving bank transfers.
However, some customers reported in replies to the announcement, external that their cards remained unavailable because Monzo’s backup service “did not perform as expected.”
A Monzo spokesperson later confirmed that all services were “back and up and running.” The company apologized for the disruption and thanked customers for their patience while the issue was being resolved.
Founded in 2015, Monzo describes itself as a “new kind of bank” that replaced traditional branches with a mobile-first banking app.
According to Monzo, more than 16 million personal and business customers worldwide currently use its banking services.
During the outage, Monzo said customers could use its independent backup service, Monzo Stand-in, to make card payments, withdraw cash, freeze cards and send or receive bank transfers.
Although the backup service worked for some customers, others continued to report problems accessing their cards and completing transactions.
“I can’t use my card right now,” one Monzo customer posted on X, external.
Another customer said: “Your ‘backup’ bank doesn’t have the features you say it does. Bank transfers are currently not possible.” The user added, external.
