Technicians have installed a commemorative plaque on NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, as shown in a July 28, 2026, photo. The plaque celebrates the legacy of Dr. Nancy Grace Roman, NASA’s first chief astronomer and a pioneering architect of the agency’s modern space science program. It also carries a memory card containing 1,350,144 names submitted by people worldwide, including astronauts selected for NASA’s Artemis II and Artemis III missions.
Scheduled to launch on Aug. 30, 2026, NASA’s Roman Space Telescope will study the universe in unprecedented detail. The observatory will block starlight to directly image exoplanets and planet-forming disks, conduct a statistical survey of planetary systems across the Milky Way, and investigate major scientific questions involving dark energy, exoplanets, and infrared astrophysics.
