OpenAI May Be Testing an Always-On ChatGPT Assistant Called “o”
OpenAI may be testing a new always-on assistant reportedly called “o”, based on references to unannounced features that briefly appeared online.
OpenAI has not confirmed or denied that it is developing an always-on assistant. However, some users spotted a reference on X that listed “Oh, your always-on assistant” as one of the benefits of the $100 ChatGPT Pro plan.

The reference appeared alongside benefits including increased Work and Codex usage, maximum memory, 100 GB of file storage, and early access to new features.
Another dynamic configuration reportedly includes display_name: "o" and email_suffix: "-o". This could suggest that the assistant may eventually have some form of email functionality or a separate identity, although the configuration does not confirm how OpenAI plans to use it.
An always-on assistant could continue helping with tasks even when users are not actively interacting with ChatGPT. For now, however, the details of OpenAI’s plans remain unclear.
Could OpenAI reveal the assistant at DevDay 2026?
OpenAI has confirmed that it will host DevDay 2026 in San Francisco on September 29. The event is expected to feature new announcements, technical sessions, demonstrations, and tools.
That makes DevDay a possible venue for OpenAI to share more information about the “o” assistant, although the company has not said that the feature will be announced there.
References have also appeared to an internal “Aeon” system for custom agents in the ChatGPT workspace. However, “o” appears to be a separate consumer-focused experience.
