2028 Volvo XC40 Gets a Cleaner Design, Gemini AI and More Safety Technology

The revised 2028 Volvo XC40 takes a more restrained approach to SUV design. Volvo has trimmed unnecessary volume from the vehicle, moving its edges slightly farther away from pedestrians and making the SUV appear smaller. The result is a less aggressive look that stands out from the industry’s continuing shift toward larger SUVs.

Volvo XC40 adds Gemini to its Android Automotive infotainment system

The biggest interior update is a new 11.2-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system. Volvo was an early adopter of Google’s Android Automotive OS and Google Automotive Services, and the updated XC40 continues that integration with Gemini.

Adding more AI functionality may raise questions, but limited testing suggests Gemini works better as a voice assistant than the system it replaces. Volvo is also adding an interior option that combines cardamom leather with open-grain wood trim.

More radar, camera and parking-assistance technology

As expected from Volvo, the updated XC40 also receives additional safety technology. The new system includes front, rear and corner radars, a forward-looking camera, new ultrasonic sensors and revised software.

The software update includes an upgraded 3D view for the XC40’s 360-degree fused parking camera, giving drivers a more detailed view around the vehicle while maneuvering.

New lighting and exterior styling details

The updated front lighting keeps Volvo’s Thor’s Hammer design but gives it a more minimalist appearance, with more of the technology hidden from view. A new rear light cluster completes the exterior redesign.

2028 Volvo XC40 release timing

The revised 2028 Volvo XC40 is expected to enter production later this year and go on sale next year. Volvo is also updating the electric EX40 with the same styling changes, but that model will not be available in the United States.
