Scientists may be closer than ever to detecting dark matter, although the potential discovery still needs to be independently confirmed.
Researchers from the University of Bristol have contributed to a two-year experiment designed to detect dark matter—the invisible material believed to account for more than 85% of the matter in the universe.
Using highly sensitive detectors at an underground laboratory in the United States, the team searched for evidence of dark matter particles colliding with atoms.
Lead physicist Dr Sam Eriksen said the findings could represent a “first step towards understanding dark matter as a particle”. However, additional research is needed to determine whether the signal is genuinely linked to dark matter or another unknown source.
“This is incredibly exciting after a huge scientific effort,” said the senior researcher at the University of Bristol.
Scientists have long supported the existence of dark matter because it does not emit or reflect light, making it invisible to conventional telescopes and other optical instruments.
Although dark matter is thought to make up most of the universe’s mass, researchers have never directly detected it. Independent verification will be essential before scientists can confirm the first definitive dark matter detection.
