Dangerous Storm Surge and Flash Flooding Threaten Alabama and Florida Gulf Coast
Dangerous storm surges of up to 6 feet are expected along the Alabama and Florida coasts, particularly around high tide. Strong winds and large waves are also forecast.
Up to 15 Inches of Rain Could Cause Major Flooding
Between 101 and 203 millimeters of rain is expected across southern Alabama, Florida’s Panhandle and Big Bend, and southwestern Georgia.
Some locations could receive up to 15 inches (381 millimeters) of rain. Flash flooding is possible, especially in urban areas, while isolated river flooding is also a concern.
Hurricane and Storm Surge Watch Issued
The National Weather Service has issued a hurricane and storm surge watch along the Gulf Coast.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in 25 counties because of concerns about the storm’s potential impact.
Storm Disrupts Major Sporting Events
The storm’s arrival has caused several major sporting events in the region to be canceled or rescheduled. The much-anticipated football game between the University of Georgia and the University of Alabama, with President Donald Trump scheduled to attend, is set to take place Saturday in Tuscaloosa.
Storm to Weaken Inland but Still Bring Destructive Rain
As the storm moves inland and loses contact with its fuel source—warm water—it is expected to weaken. However, potentially destructive wet weather could still affect a wide section of the southeastern United States, stretching from the Tennessee Valley to the Carolinas.
