Protective measures are being introduced to safeguard an ancient oak tree in Manthorpe, near Grantham, believed to date back to the time of Sir Isaac Newton.
South Kesteven District Council said the historic oak tree was at risk from heavily compacted soil and ropes attached to its branches for children to play on.
To protect the tree and improve public safety, council officials have installed a new wooden fence to restrict access to the surrounding area.
A council spokesperson said a policy of “minimal intervention” would deliver the greatest benefits for local wildlife while helping to preserve the ancient oak for future generations.
Councillor Reece Baker, cabinet member for the environment, said: “This is one of the most remarkable trees in the area and is recorded in the Forest Trust’s Ancient Tree Inventory.”
He added: “Restricting access around the tree will improve soil and rooting conditions, helping to protect this historic oak and preserve the surrounding landscape.”
